What’s the difference between a preference and a dealbreaker?

A preference changes who you’re likely to meet first, but never rules anyone out. A dealbreaker rules out everyone whose answer isn’t one you chose. Your age range always applies. On top of those, you can have up to three dealbreakers, and each one usually means fewer introductions.

Age range

This always applies, both ways. You’re only introduced to someone inside your age range if you’re also inside theirs. Singapore is small, so where you live doesn’t limit who you meet.

Preferences

Every other question starts as a preference. Choose the answers you’d prefer, for example non-smokers. People who match your preference rank higher for you, but people who don’t can still be introduced. Turn on This matters a lot to me to give a preference more weight.

Dealbreakers

Turn on Make it a dealbreaker for a question only if you’d never want to meet someone without one of the answers you chose. Before you can:

  • you need to have answered that question about yourself, and
  • you need to choose which answers you’d accept.

You can have up to three dealbreakers besides age. Interests can’t be a dealbreaker.

A few rules apply to everyone and don’t count towards your three, such as never introducing someone who wants children to someone who doesn’t. Your faith requirement and needing a halal partner work the same way. See the rules that apply to everyone.

What a dealbreaker costs

Before you switch one on, Steade shows how often you’d likely be introduced with it: about every week, about every 2–3 weeks, or about once a month or less. It also shows how often you’d be introduced without your dealbreakers, so you can compare.

Two things to know:

  • People who keep that answer private won’t be introduced to you. A private answer never counts as meeting a dealbreaker.
  • A narrow age range has a cost too. If your range is narrow, Steade suggests that a wider one would give you more introductions.

We never loosen a dealbreaker for you. If you go three rounds without an introduction, Home suggests reviewing your preferences, and nothing changes unless you change it.

Changing them later

Go to Profile, then Who you’d like to meet, and tap Edit. Changes apply from your next introduction. If a change rules out the person you’ve just been introduced to, that introduction is cancelled.
