How does the identity check work?
You can verify with Singpass, or upload a photo of your NRIC or Singapore pass and take a selfie. Your identity is checked before your profile goes live.
Verify with Singpass
- Tap Verify with Singpass and log in to Singpass.
- Singpass shows the details Steade asks for: your date of birth, sex and NRIC or FIN number. Agree to share them.
- Back in Steade, check your details. They come from government records, so they can’t be changed here. If something is wrong, cancel and update it with the issuing agency first.
- Tap Confirm and continue. You’re verified straight away.
We keep your date of birth and sex. Your NRIC or FIN number is turned into a one-way code that stops the same person opening two accounts. The number itself is never stored or shown to anyone. If you cancel, nothing from Singpass is saved.
If Singpass doesn’t have a full date of birth and sex for you, we’ll ask you to use the document check instead.
Verify with your NRIC or Singapore pass
If you don’t have Singpass, or would rather not use it:
- Choose NRIC if you’re a Singapore citizen or PR, or Singapore pass if you live here on an Employment Pass, S Pass, Work Permit, Dependant’s Pass, Long-Term Visit Pass or Student’s Pass. A passport on its own isn’t accepted.
- Enter your sex and date of birth exactly as they appear on your document.
- Add a photo of the front of your NRIC or pass card. If your pass is digital, a screenshot of it from the SGWorkPass app works too. Keep all four corners in frame and avoid glare.
- Take a selfie in good light, with nothing covering your face.
- Tap Send for review.
A moderator checks that the selfie matches your document and confirms your date of birth and sex, usually within 2 working days. We email you when the review is done. You can set up the rest of your profile while you wait.
What happens to your document
A moderator uses the images only to confirm your age, your sex and that you’re a real person. They’re deleted as soon as the review is decided, and within 7 days at most.
We keep your date of birth and sex. Your document number is never stored in readable form: we keep only a one-way code made from it, so the same person can’t open two accounts.
What the check tells other members
It tells them you’re a real adult whose identity has been confirmed. It doesn’t tell anyone your intentions, so the community rules apply to everyone.
